McDonnell was awarded the Academy Award nomination for her role as Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is also well-known for her portrayal of President Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica and as President's wife on Independence Day and for her leading role in Donnie Darko, as the main protagonist's mother.
